Blue is the Warmest Color

Blue is the Warmest Color is an Abdellatif Kechiche film, starring Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos, is a coming of age story centered around Adele, a teenage girl, struggling with her sexuality. The story starts off with Adele meeting a boy who shows interest in her. After going on a couple dates and spending time together, she begins to lose interest. Instead, she fantasizes about a girl she saw days prior. The film follows Adele’s journey of self-discovery as she navigates through her relationship with Emma.

Throughout the film, we get to know Adele but only through her love for Emma. She seems to lack a sense of self and lives vicariously through Emma. There is a scene in which Adele hosts a party to congratulate Emma on her success, and invites her friends and colleagues. Throughout the event, it is apparent that Adele does not feel comfortable nor fit in with Emma’s peers, but Emma makes no effort to validate or show any appreciation for Adele. She even goes as far as to try and persuade Adele that she should follow another career path. This personally leads me to believe that Emma never really loved Adele, the way Adele loved her. Or maybe they never loved each other, maybe they were infatuated or drawn in by lust.

Emma was Adele’s first experience with another woman which draws me to believe she just didn’t want to let go for sentimental reasons.

Do you think Emma loved Adele the way Adele loved her?
