Bride and Prejudice

Bride and Prejudice is a romantic comedy that represents a Bollywood remake of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The movie takes place in Amristar, India and is about a family of six with four daughters. The mother of her four daughters is very persistent in trying to marry off all of them. Lalita is the second daughter and very stubborn. She believes in working for herself and falling in love with someone she loves rather than an arranged marriage. The film surrounds Lalita who is very independent and stands up for herself and what she believes in.

The scene in the film that stood out to me was when a potential suitor was coming to meet Jaya, Maya, Lakhi, and Lalita. Her mother instructed them to look their best and told Lalita specifically, to not say “anything too intelligent.” This scene upset me because it showed how in order for Lalita to be “desired” she had to look pretty and not say anything that would infuriate the man. At the dinner, Lalita said something intelligent to correct their guest and her father was lowkey pleased with Lalita. It’s ironic how the mother was trying to repress Lalita’s intelligence; however, her father was encouraging her. Her father wants the most for her; and you can tell he does not approve of these “arranged marriages.”

Do you think Darcy had a right to convince Baraj to not marry Jaya? Was it with good reason and does it go with the meaning the movie is trying to portray?
